What's the best gas BBQ grill in the $500 price range?

I am looking to buy a great BBQ grill, and I've discovered there are hundreds of choices! Since I'm not a grilling expert, I have no idea what the best ones are. I'm looking for something that will last a long time, heats evenly, has a side burner, and has wheels. I'm willing to spend up to $500, possibly a bit more for the "perfect" grill. Ideas?

You can't really mention BBQ grills without talking about Weber. They are one of the most durable grills available with good customer service as well. Our old Weber has lasted more than 12 years with no problems. For everyone but the most die-hard "competition" griller, its a great brand to go with.

If you want a side burner you will probably stretch the $500 price range if you go with Weber.

Stepping away from Weber can get you the same features for a lower price. Char-Broil also makes a few grills with side burners with the most attractive being the Stainless Steel Designer Series for $399.00:

The picture doesn't look like it has castor wheels but they are hidden under the frame.

Another quality brand that is getting more and more popular is Ducane. The Ducane Affinity line is very affordable and has a great 5 year warranty. Check out the Affinity 3200 with side burner at $399.00

On the lower end of your budget, you can still get a decent grill with sideburner and wheels. The Char-Broil Terrace Designer Series is not quite as powerful as the above grills but has all the basic features like push button ignition and stainless steel construction. It currently goes for $262.10

1. What is the difference between direct and indirect cooking?
Direct cooking on a BBQ is when the food is cooked directly onto the grill or griddle of your Barbecue.

Indirect cooking is achieved when the lid of your BBQ is closed. This takes the heat off the food and by using only the burners at the sides to heat up the inside area – your BBQ now becomes similar to cooking in an indoor oven.

2. What is the best method to clean a Gas Barbecue?

For best results leave all the burners of your Barbecue on high, for five to ten minutes. Then turn off and allow to cool, then simply wipe over with a damp cloth, later coating it with cooking oil. It is always a good idea to use a Barbecue mitt when cleaning to avoid burning yourself. Another tried and tested way is to use a brass bristle wire Barbecue brush.

3. How do I store my Barbecue over the winter months?

The best way to store and protect your BBQ over the winter months is with a cover to protect it from the cold and wet, it will also help to prevent mould and mildew. If you decide to store your Barbecue in a garage or shed, bottles of gas for your Gas Barbecue must be stored outside and you should never move your BBQ with the gas bottle either attached or still on.

4. How do I start a charcoal BBQ?

Either place your coal on top of two or three fire lighters and then simply light it. Or pour ½ a cup of lighting fluid over a layer of charcoal allow to soak for approximately 1 minute and light using a long taper.

When the flames have died down and ash has appeared the coals will turn white then it is time to place your food on the grill.
