Washington Old Hall is the ancestral home of General George Washington, the first president of the United States of America. They American people named their new capital after this small Durham village. Evidence indicates that Washington was an important site in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon England. The spelling changed over the centuries: Wessington, Wessyngton, Weshington These early spellings meant soak or steeping in Saxon, similar to the modern German word wasser for water. A wash is also a body of water as in the Wash, a large bay on the East Coast of England. It is clear that Washington was originally an extremely wet area.

Another version of the name suggests that it comes from Hwaes ( a Saxon chief) ing, meaning family and tun or estate, hence the home of Hwaes' (wassa) people. Sir William de Hertburn, the first Washington ancestor to live in the area moved there from Morpeth in Northumberland during 1183. Landowners at that time took their names from their properties and William de Hertburn became William de Wessyngton. The Washington coat of arms, consisting of stars and stripes later formed the basis of the American flag. William built the stone manor house for his Scottish bride, Margaret, sister of King William the Lion. This Norman stayed in the Washington family until the death of his great, great, great, great grandson, Sir William de Wessington V in 1399. He had no male heirs and his daughter married into the Tempest family, taking the hall and estates with her.

The family later moved south to Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire before emigrating in 1657 to Northern Neck in Virginia. The original 12th Century manor house was torn down in 1613 and the present hall was built on the foundations by William James, Prince Bishop of Durham. It was later let out to tenants in the 18th Century and began to fall into disrepair. The hall was threatened with demolition in 1936. Local historian and teacher Fred Hill started a campaign to save it for the people of Washington. The hall was fully restored and opened to the public by the American Ambassador in 1955. It was handed over to the National Trust, who now maintain it two years later.

Washington Old Hall, which is built of local sandstone is a typical example of a small 17th Century English manor house, is open to the public through much of the year and many lectures are held in various rooms. The arches between the kitchen and the Great Hall are from the 12th Century house. Visitor can view the bedrooms with beamed ceilings, the wood panelled parlour and the kitchen with many unique historical features. The hall is licenced to be a venue for weddings.

A celebration of the American Independence is held most years in early July is attended by representatives from the American armed forces. There is frequently entertainment by re-enactment groups during these events. The Long Garden, which was donated to the National Trust by Mr and Mrs Mothersole, has been landscaped in the Jacobean style while other land that the National trust has since obtained has been recreated as a nuttery.

Pedestrian Bridge, Texas

This beautiful arched bridge in Lake Austin was a private build by Miro Rivera Architects and is used to connect the client's main house to the smaller guesthouse on the other side of the water. The idea was to make the bridge seem as natural as possible within its surroundings and to do this they made the decking and reed-like hand rails as imperfect as possible. The result is a bridge that looks extremely fragile but definitely worth the risk.

Octavio Frias de Oliveira Bridge, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Opened in May of this year, the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Bridge is a stunning x-shaped cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Pinheiros River in Sao Paulo. It's design is unique in that the 2 curved decks of the bridge cross each other through its x-shaped supporting tower, an illuminated structure that stands 450ft tall and has attached to it 144 steel cables.

Kintaikyo, Iwakuni, Japan

The original Kintai Bridge was built in 1673 and didn't stand very long until it was damaged due to flooding. It was then rebuilt and survived for more than 200 years until a typhoon battered it to death in 1950. The bridge that stands now over the Nishiki Riveris the 3rd build and looks magnificent, it's 5 wooden arches displaying an incredible amount of detail and craftsmanship. Interesting fact: no nails or bolts have been used to build the arches, only clamps and wires.

Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge in Guizhou is an enormous railway bridge that was built as part of the much larger 'Guizhou-Shuibai Railway Project'. Connecting 2 mountains over a deep ravine, at its highest point the bridge's deck sits 918ft above the ground (to compare, at its highest point the Millau viaduct's deck clears the river underneath by 890ft). The bridge has succeeded in connecting 2 of the country's poorest areas.

Henderson Waves, Southern Ridges, Singapore

'Henderson Waves' is Singapore's highest pedestrian bridge and can be found at the southern ridges, a beautiful 9km stretch of gardens and parks which has frequently drawn comparisons to New York's Central Park. The bridge itself is absolutely stunning. The deck is made from thousands of Balau wood slats, perfectly cut and arranged, and along the length of the deck a huge snaking, undulating shell cleverly forms sheltered seating areas on every upward curve.

This is the incredible, brand new vertical lift bridge in Rouen, France, a beast of a structure whose 2 bridge spans weigh 1200tons each but can be hoisted 180ft vertically by the bridge's lifting mechanism in an impressive 12 minutes. Just the angular structures at the top of each tower weigh in at 450tons each, helping to support the lifting system as cruise ships sail through.

Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea

Technically, this is a bridge: it's a structure, which spans a gorge. The only difference is, the bridge can't be used by humans due to the fact that its purpose is to support 2 pipelines - 1 gas, 1 oil - across the extremely high gap in Papua New Guinea. So high in fact that if this were to be officially recognized as a bridge it would rocket to the top of the 'world's highest bridge-span' list at an impressive height of 1290ft. By comparison, the current highest bridge span belongs to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, hanging a mere 1053ft above ground level, while Manhattan's Chrysler Building measures 1047ft.

That is more that enough room for 3-4 beardies. But I would not go over 2. I keep my 2 in a 40 gallon breeder tank with no problems at all. If you are going to keep 2 together make sure it is 2 females or a male and a female (which can become difficult), but never 2 males because they will almost certainly fight.

King Arthur appears often in literature, from the Mabinogion to Geoffrey of Monmouth, from Ninnius to Chretien de Troyes; but it's difficult to reconcile his literary adventures with the real Arthur who, if he existed at all, was probably a Celtic warlord who united his countrymen against the invading Saxons.

In literature and folklore, King Arthur is most often associated with Cornwall and Wales; the name Pendragon is Anglo-Welsh, meaning "Dragon's Head". And while his famous court at Camelot has often been linked with Caerleon, just outside Newport in the south east of Wales, there are several legends placing Arthur and his feats in the Snowdonia region of North Wales.

Whether or not Arthur existed is debatable. However, folk memories last a long time, and one has to wonder if there's some shred of truth to the local Arthurian legends that still survive in Snowdonia.

One tale describes how Arthur met a giant, Ritta, on the slopes of Snowdon while out riding with his knights. Arthur remarked upon Ritta's unusual cloak, which the giant explained was made from the beards of kings. Ritta said he would be honoured to include Arthur's beard in his cloak but Arthur, reluctant to part with his facial hair, refused. A fight ensued and Arthur slew the giant and had him buried under a cairn at the mountain's summit.

Snowdonia is dotted with cromlechs, ancient burial chambers left behind by our ancestors thousands of years ago. Yet despite the age of these atmospheric monuments to our forebears, folk tales still connect them with Arthur who, if he existed, would probably have lived in the 5th or 6th century. One such tale claims the cromlech at Cefnamlwch, on the Llyn Peninsula, was formed when Arthur threw the capstone from the top of Garn Fadrwn, while the three standing stones beneath were carried there by Arthur's wife in her apron.

Dinas Emrys, an old hill fort at Beddgelert, has several Arthurian connections in literature and folklore. The name Dinas Emrys honours Merlin - full name Myrddin Emrys - who described two warring dragons in a pool beneath the fort. The pool is, apparently, still there; a first century rectangle choked with tall grasses. In another tale - "Lludd and Llefelys" from the Mabinogion, an ancient collection of Welsh folk tales - the dragons were put into stone coffers and thereafter the place was known as Dinas Emreis.

In another tale Arthur fought a monster, the Afanc, which lived in Llyn Barfog (the Bearded Lake), not far from Aberdyfi. The Afanc had been terrorising the area so Arthur went to fight it. He lassoed the beast with an enormous chain, and his horse, Llamrai, hauled it from the lake to be slain. A nearby rock, Carn March Arthur (the Stone of Arthur's Horse) bears a deeply-etched hoofprint, said to have been made by Llamrai as the Afanc was dragged from the lake.

Lakes are a common theme in Snowdonia's Arthurian tales. Llyn Dinas, a Snowdonia lake which reflects the fort of Dinas Emrys which towers over it, is said to be the site of a battle between Arthur's knight Sir Owain and a giant. The hill beside Llyn Dinas, local legend says, is where Merlin's treasure is buried.

At least two lakes in Snowdonia are claimed to be home to the Lady of the Lake and the final resting place of Excalibur, Arthur's sword. Some local legends say that Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur into Llyn Llydaw, beneath Snowdon, after Arthur's death; and that this was the lake Arthur sailed across to reach the magical isle of Avalon. Another story insists the sword was thrown into Llyn Ogwen, also in the mountains of Snowdonia.

Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), off the tip of the Llyn Peninsula, is another place with Arthurian connections. In some tales the island is Avalon. In others, Enlli is the burial place of Merlin, who lies in a cave or in a magical house of glass. It's also said that Arthur's ship lies at the bottom of Bardsey Sound, the stretch of water separating Enlli from the Llyn Peninsula.

And even Arthur's final battle is said to have taken place in Snowdonia. One story says that he died at Tregalan, where he was brought down by a hail of enemy arrows at a pass that is to this day called Bwlch y Saethau, or Pass of the Arrows. Arthur's knights covered his body with a cairn of stones, still known as Carnedd Arthur or Arthur's Cairn. After his death, Arthur's knights sealed themselves in a cave below the summit of Y Lliwedd where to this day they slumber, fully armoured, ready to fight at their king's side when he awakens to save Wales in her hour of greatest need.
