The short answer: Chlorine gas destabilizes exponentially as water temperature increases. Warm pool water requires more chlorine tabs (or liquid) to maintain a free acting chlorine level. However, chlorine is also less active at higher pH ranges.
If you're using chlorine tablets, you're really just adding cyanuric acid (more commonly known when referring to pool water chemistry as "stabilizer" or "conditioner") which is stabilized in the presence of chlorine gas. As the cyanuric acid, which makes up the physical tab, dissolves in the pool water the chlorine gas is released into solution.
