Most of us have faced the situation where we had to provide an extra bed for a guest in our home. But many of us were not prepared for the situation. Usually the guest or we had to sleep, if you can call it that, on the couch rather uncomfortably. That is why foam sleepers were invented. These while normally functioning as a chair or a sofa can be folded out in to a bed fairly quickly and easily. They provide a space saving way to have an extra bed in your house or apartment just in case, especially in cases where there are no extra guest rooms to accommodate guests.

Foam chairs can also be used as comfortable lounging chairs, for watching televisions or reading, especially for children. They will make the experience more pleasurable and preserve your other furniture from damage. In fact some chairs made for this purpose can be folded out into either partial and fully reclining positions as per requirements.

Convertible sofas, futons, and bean bags, offer similar functionality; that is conversion from a chair to a bed or reclining chair. However they differ in the way it is achieved. In foam sleepers the bed is folded in to the sofa and has to be pulled out, while in others the whole sofa or chair is converted into the bed or reclining chair.

Foam sleepers are available in variety of sizes, shapes, and even names. The choice of upholstery and mattresses is wide as well. We will go through some of the factors that must be looked into when buying a foam sleeper.

Foam sleepers are more expensive than normal sofas; you must first decide whether the expense is worth it. You should check in several stores in order get the best prices and try them out in the stores to ensure their quality and comfort.

You should also have clear idea about how much rearranging will be required when the sofa is converted into a bed.

Mattresses used in sleeper sofas can be quite different from each other. They are also more flexible and as such less firm than normal mattresses. Memory foam mattresses do not have any coils in them and conforms to the sleeper's body much more easily than others. Inner spring mattresses have coils inside them. Comfort will depend on the number of coils inside; more the better. Air coil mattresses feature an inner coil mattress and an air mattress combined with the air mattress on top of the coil one.

Foam Sleepers can be upholstered using various materials ranging from fabrics, to leather, to micro-fibers. Fabrics upholstery will be available in many colors and patterns to match your other furnishings requirements. Leather will last longer, but your range of choices when it comes to colors, will be limited. Micro-fiber upholstery will also last longer and will be wrinkle free and will keep their shape for longer. Bill C-37 that passed on 17 April 2008 and finally came into effect on 17 April 2009 is a very interesting amendment to the Canadian Citizenship Act. This document gives Canadian citizenship to those who lost or never had it, due to outdated provisions in existing and former legislation. The government believes that this could restore citizenship of hundreds of thousands unsuspecting foreigners. The biggest part (over 240.000) is believed to be in America, and these are just people born from 1947 to 1977. This amendment not only automatically restores Canadian nationality to many people that were forced to renounce it when they became citizens of another country, but also grants citizenship to their children. After 1947 there were actually numerous problems with the Citizenship Act that led to mistakes and loss of citizenship. The new amendment doesn't make the people Canadian citizens instantly, they still have to apply for citizenship. It means that people who don't want to change nationality don't need to solve problems with being recognized as Canadian citizen. People who want to keep their other nationality can always renounce their new citizenship.

If we look into history the Canadian Citizenship Act took effect on 1 January 1947 and stated that anyone (with the exception of diplomat children) born in Canada from 1947 onwards acquired Canadian citizenship at birth. In 1977 the Canadian nationality law was revisited, when the new Citizenship Act came into force. From this date the Canadians who were born outside the country received citizenship and Canada also fully accepted multiple citizenship. However the people who lost their citizenship before that date did not automatically have it restored until 17 April 2009 when Bill C-37 became law. The group of activists that played an important role in the passing of this bill consisted mostly of people born in the thirty year long span from 1947 to 1977.

The fight for this amendment and the restoration was started by a group of people who lost their citizenship rights due to various mostly unfair reasons. The biggest part are Canadians who were born in U.S. hospitals from 1947 to 1977. During this time if a family crossed the border and the child was born in the U.S. and not registered with the government, the child was not recognized as Canadian. Also members of the families of Canadian servicemen lost their citizenship if they stayed out of the country for a decade or more. There were also the grandchildren of the Canadian Mennonites who moved to Mexico in the 1920s to the 1960s. When these grandchildren tried to return to Canada their nationality was classified as unclear. Despite the fact that some of these cases were reviewed for years, this group of people with unclear nationality became more active in the last few years. One of the reasons was that new U.S. rules requiring passports for travel between Canada and the U.S. uncovered very large numbers of people who reported that they have Canadian citizenship, but were not officially confirmed citizens of Canada.

Covered in abstract monoliths of all shapes and sizes. For a moment, I felt as though I had been transported onto the film set of a "Star Wars" movie. All I needed now was my son's light saber and you could call me Luke Skywalker.

The rock-strewn landscape glittered like gold in the midday sun, the harsh rays bouncing off the twisted structures. Eager to get a birds eye view of Egypt's mystical White Desert we left the 4X4 behind us and headed off to climb one of the larger rocks. With no wind to speak of, and ravaging temperatures somewhere in the mid 40's it was an intense endevour, but worth it for the mesmerising views.

The chalk sculptures, which rise up majestically from the sand have been formed by the fierce desert winds - an art gallery that comes courtesy of the natural world. If you look closely, the gnarled shapes have a certain "lifelike" quality about them – as though faces have been carefully etched into the rocks by a human hand.

As the sun started to set on the rich desert landscape we were invited to camp out in a traditional Bedouin tent, which is customarily divided into two sections by a woven curtain known as a ma'nad. Inviting as it was, I decided to roll up one of my three comfortable mattresses and spend the night pitched out on a rocky outcrop under the stars. I was eager to savour the experience in its entirety, from dusk to dawn. The sun melted away into the ether casting hues of violet and pink across the massive rocks, the moonlight throwing strange shadows over the rugged terrain and lulling me into a peaceful slumber.

Arid and deserted, the white desert contrasts sharply with the bustling streets of Cairo and its nearby treasures. Only a few days before I had been treated to the delights of ancient Egypt with a tour of the Giza Pyramids, Sphinx and Step Pyramid at Saqqara. The tourist zones, as you would expect, are populated by truckloads of eager globetrotters, all coming to marvel at the country's famous monuments. Yet, despite giving into the desire to cross off all the must do pit stops, I was in search of the less well-travelled corners of the country. There's also sound economic reasoning in getting off the beaten track, as the prices tend to drop dramatically. For instance, a three course meal in the Western Desert might cost you as little as £5.50 GBP a head.

For years I'd been an overland fanatic getting my kicks out of Africa for anything up to five weeks at a time. However, in 2009, I'd decided to forgo the usual holiday and opt for a shorter itinerary. Ever since my visit to the Tutankhamen exhibition at the O2 centre, I'd been itching to get a taster of this exotic country in the hope of venturing further than the Nile Valley and the Red Sea. My 17 intrepid counterparts were also keen to get away from the tourist enclaves and begin a journey of mythical proportions.

A 4X4 is ideal for traversing the more remote regions – our next journey taking us to the Frafra Oasis. The least known amongst the oases of the New Valley in the Western Desert, this area is a world away from the tourist trail and it is also home to the famous sculptor, Badr. Somewhat of a celebrity in otherwise little known Egypt, Badr is a self-taught artist who has exhibited in Europe and Cairo.

We were invited into Badr's museum and home, which is surrounded by a colourful desert garden, cluttered from beginning to end with his ingenious works of art. Each of the pieces, ranging from donkeys to wizened old women and tall elegant traders on camels, lead you on a tour through his imagination.

Our new-found friend played host for an hour or two while we sat wide-eyed and watched him chipping away at the sandstone. Within a few minutes you could see his vision unraveling before us. The rock crumbled, and the features of a small boy slowly came into being. A truly thought provoking experience I parted with just eight pounds sterling adding yet another customised relic to my collection of travel artifacts. It will be a constant reminder of my time in undiscovered Egypt – a remote haven which I am eager to find out more about on my return.

A recent New York Times editorial indicates that the Obama honeymoon may be coming to end as the faltering economy continues to eliminate jobs and a tidal wave of foreclosures grows by the month. Through May foreclosure filings reached the one million mark with estimates for the whole of 2009 coming in at 2.4 million. The foreclosure issue, as large as it is presently, could easily exceed the current yearend estimates if job losses stay at their current pace of over 600,000 per month. As it stands, 15.4 homes are currently underwater with mortgage balances that exceed home values. Additionally, 5.4 million homes are currently delinquent or at some stage of the foreclosure process.

The New York Times concludes that "The Obama administration needs to step up its efforts to aid the middle class — or the financial crisis will have no end in sight." The Times proposes a two part solution to the foreclosure crisis; the first being economic stimulus to stem job losses, an argument that holds obvious merit. Their second proposal concludes that "Loan modification programs that reduce monthly payments may not be effective, because the bigger problem is negative equity." They fault the administration for building a plan that centers on lower monthly mortgage payments while only recommending principle reductions instead of somehow making them mandatory. The Times also criticizes the administration's anti-foreclosure plan which was recently gutted by the large banks and mortgage lenders.

The cure-all proposed by The New York Times appears to be focused on principle reductions across the board which would be steep enough to restore some equity to borrowers, giving them additional motivation to stay in their homes and allow them to borrow against their new-found equity should a hardship such as the loss of a job or illness occur.
Simply put, an asset transfer from banks to homeowners of that magnitude is never going to happen. From the bank's side of the ledger, principle reductions would result in massive mark to market losses for the banks and their mortgage investors. These losses would again deplete mandated capital reserves resulting in another round of bailouts that would make the FSA/TARP bailout look like pocket change. On the homeowner's side, the fact is that if The New York times got its way and lenders were forced to reduce principle to the point where homeowners would again have an equity position in their homes, the next step for many would be "cash out refi's." In other words, the equity stripping that factored into the trashing of housing markets like Detroit would occur nationwide. Granted, there might be an unintended temporary boost to the economy but once that was over, homeowner's would have a larger mortgage balance and monthly payments, ending up in worse shape than they were prior to receiving their gift of equity from the banks.

By the end of the editorial, the Times is calling for home equity to be restored to homeowners, jobs to be added to the economy, and steady paychecks for all. How banks remain solvent, who pays for job stimulus, and how regular pay checks are covered in this grand plan is left for someone else to answer. The Times does get it half right in that it's fixing the economy that will finally curb the foreclosure crisis. The big questions again are how and how much will it take?
