When it comes to gardening, there are some additional benefits to just having your own fruits and vegetables. Not only can you be a "green" thumb, but you can be a  contributor to the "green" living movement by recycling common household "garbage" items into useful, and helpful, garden utensils.

Take the common soup can. By removing the top AND bottom lids, this cylinder becomes a useful starting pot. Removing the top and bottom lids will help aid in the removal of your plant start with greater ease. Now, don't throw away those lids! The lids can be placed at the base of light loving plants, such as tomatoes! The lids will reflect sunlight, thus providing extra light. In addition, the reflected light has been shown to repel plant eating insects and aphids. To deter birds from your fruits trees, punch holes in the lids and hang them from tree branches. Apparently the reflected light and movement scares these rascals away.

Another "green" idea for recycled starting pots are used, washed, individual jello or pudding containers! They are just the perfect size to start individual plants! It is also wise and frugal to wash and reuse any and all previously purchased vegetable or plant containers. It is important to wash the containers out, and even use a mild bleach solution, to kill any bacteria or pest that may have hitched a ride with the previous "owner".

Styrofoam or plastic trays from pre-packaged meats make excellent holders for peat pots or pellets. They are also practical holders for your individual plant starts and help prevent water from getting on your window sill or potting bench. Pre-packaged dinners, such as lasagna, come in perfect containers in which you can convert to a medium for starting various herbs or vegetables.

One gallon plastic milk jugs have a variety of uses. The milk jug can be either used as an individual miniature green house, or, by just using the top 2/3rds of the jug, you can make your own "hot" caps for tomatoes or peppers. I have also used the extra plastic to make plant markers. With a "sharpie" and a plastic marker, I have a winning combination...all water resistant so I don't forget what I planted and where!

Popsicle sticks are another excellent choice for garden stakes or plant markers. I even keep the plant markers from the previous garden season.  I just simply reuse them if it is the same type of plant or I turn the marker over and write on the back the new vegetable I am growing!

Instead of going to the land fill, raked leaves, lawn clippings, spoiled hay, etc., can and should be used for mulching around individual plants and on garden pathways. Christmas day in Rome has got to be special and it was. We started our day with a walking tour which commenced at the Spanish Steps. They were beautifully decorated and at the top afford a wonderful view out over Rome. At the bottom of the stairs is the boat fountain by Bernini and the start of the most exclusive shopping street in Rome, the Via Condotti.

From here we passed the Colombo dedicated to the immaculate conception on our way to the Trevi Fountain. When in Rome this visit is a must and they say when you throw your two coins in that one coin will fulfill a wish and the other will ensure you return to Rome one day. I have never seen it with such few people which was fantastic.

Next stop on our walking tour was Piazza Navona via the Pantheon. Piazza Navona is famous for the Four Rivers Fountain by Bernini which has just finished a three year restoration and is looking fantastic. Time in Rome's Christmas markets here around Piazza Navona before walking across the Tiber river for a great view of St Peter's on our way to see the Pope.

For readers of Angels & Demons by Dan Brown fans it is a treat to walk past Castle St Angelo on the way. If you haven't read this novel put it on your list for an entertaining holiday read.

When in Rome on Christmas day it would be a shame to miss the blessing by the Pope, regardless of your religious beliefs. The Pope is one of the worlds most powerful and influential people and the atmosphere in the square is quite electric.

Back to the coach for a drive around Rome on our way past Circus Maximus of Ben Hur fame, on our way to the Colosseum. Built in the first century AD it is remarkably preserved and stands at the edge of the Forums of Rome. Time to marvel at this historic monument before making our way past the Baths of Caracalla on our way to St Pauls Outside the Walls. This is one of the most spiritual places you will ever visit and always takes my breath away.

An afternoon siesta at the hotel and we are ready for Christmas Dinner and what a night it was with some great entertainment, great food and a little audience participation. This evening always makes for some great photos. We swapped presents and enjoyed everyones company.

I would find a different color than the wall it might be to much. You could go with black or maybe another color that is in you comforter. But I dont think I would go with the same blue on the walls. I think it my be overwelming. It is all up to you tho. Do what you think looks good.
