I'd start by sanding it down... I'm thinking a medium coarse grade paper. Then you'll need to choose your stain... if you're going for a "washed look" (i.e white wash) apply with a rag WITH the grain and have another rag to wipe off the excess. Make sure you seal with a protectant.

Well......you could build an elevated deck that soars above theirs.

1. Radiant Heated Floors - Radiant heat is unique because it first warms the coldest objects closest to the source. Thus, radiant heat is commonly installed under the floor. This means you can walk on your hard floors barefoot year round, and feel heat radiating at your feet. Radiant heat can be compared to the feeling of holding a warm mug, or walking barefoot on a warm beach. As opposed to forced air heat which tends to be dusty, dry and loud, radiant heat is simply warm and comfortable. It is a great way to add additional comfort to the home.

2. Dimmer Switches - Dimmer switches are great because you can now control the level of light in any room. Maybe you don't want bright light all the time. Maybe you would like to have lower lights in the evenings, for a better ambiance and a more comfortable feel. Dimmer switches are the way to go to improve the lighting comfort in your home. Not only are the more comfortable on the eyes, they are more comfortable on your wallet as well. A dimmer switch can save you money on electricity, as well as lengthening the life of your light bulbs.

3. Outdoor Stereo Systems - Whether you get outdoor speakers for your deck or patio, or landscape speakers throughout the yard, outdoor stereo systems are a fantastic way to make your backyard more enjoyable. 7. Additional Outlets - Everybody has a room in there house that could use an additional outlet or two. This is a great upgrade to any home, to make a more comfortable living. Additional outlets are not only incredibly convenient, they are also safer than loading up outlets with extension cords and multiple power strips.

8. Outdoor Security Lighting

Outdoor lighting is essential to enhancing the safety of your property. There are a variety of security lighting options available. You can get motion lights on your porch and surrounding areas, and even landscape lighting along walkways. If you install the brightest lights possible, landscape lighting can easily double as security lighting.

9. Air Humidifiers - Dry air can cause a number of adverse side affects, including dry skin, headaches, and allergy type symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes, and coughing and sneezing. When it comes to gardening, there are some additional benefits to just having your own fruits and vegetables. Not only can you be a "green" thumb, but you can be a  contributor to the "green" living movement by recycling common household "garbage" items into useful, and helpful, garden utensils.

Take the common soup can. By removing the top AND bottom lids, this cylinder becomes a useful starting pot. Removing the top and bottom lids will help aid in the removal of your plant start with greater ease. Now, don't throw away those lids! The lids can be placed at the base of light loving plants, such as tomatoes! The lids will reflect sunlight, thus providing extra light. In addition, the reflected light has been shown to repel plant eating insects and aphids. To deter birds from your fruits trees, punch holes in the lids and hang them from tree branches. Apparently the reflected light and movement scares these rascals away.

Another "green" idea for recycled starting pots are used, washed, individual jello or pudding containers! They are just the perfect size to start individual plants! It is also wise and frugal to wash and reuse any and all previously purchased vegetable or plant containers. It is important to wash the containers out, and even use a mild bleach solution, to kill any bacteria or pest that may have hitched a ride with the previous "owner".

Styrofoam or plastic trays from pre-packaged meats make excellent holders for peat pots or pellets. They are also practical holders for your individual plant starts and help prevent water from getting on your window sill or potting bench. Pre-packaged dinners, such as lasagna, come in perfect containers in which you can convert to a medium for starting various herbs or vegetables.

One gallon plastic milk jugs have a variety of uses. The milk jug can be either used as an individual miniature green house, or, by just using the top 2/3rds of the jug, you can make your own "hot" caps for tomatoes or peppers. I have also used the extra plastic to make plant markers. With a "sharpie" and a plastic marker, I have a winning combination...all water resistant so I don't forget what I planted and where!

Popsicle sticks are another excellent choice for garden stakes or plant markers. I even keep the plant markers from the previous garden season.  I just simply reuse them if it is the same type of plant or I turn the marker over and write on the back the new vegetable I am growing!

Instead of going to the land fill, raked leaves, lawn clippings, spoiled hay, etc., can and should be used for mulching around individual plants and on garden pathways. As you can see, there are many practical, useful, and helpful applications that can be employed in your backyard garden from "recycled" items.  By employing these "green" tips in your garden, you will not only improve the environment, but you will greatly enhance your "green" thumb!

A strange combination of materials at best???

Answer stating WELDING (not soldering) alum. to wrought is correct. The compatability is nil.

If by now, aesthetics aren't a major concern, and your budget sense says keep the chairs I think answer stating screws is likely how you have to go.

You say "Slats" as opposed to tubular aluminum, but no matter. You might reposition the slats appropriately; even clamp them in place; drill small pilot holes allowing for a STAINLESS STEEL screw, and re-attach the slats to the wrought.

With all due respect, if they were mine, I'd probably start saving funds to buy new. I have all alum. outdoor chairs, and the only issue with them is an occassional paint touch up.

Adirondack Chairs
Always a popular choice for those wanting wood outdoor furniture, these relaxing chairs were created in the early 1900's as a family man sought to discover the most comfortable place for his children to enjoy the front yard. At his workshop in New York, on the edge of Lake Champlain, Thomas Lee nailed boards together in various fashions as his 22-member family sampled each design. The favorite was chosen, a chair with a slanted back and seat and spacious armrests. He took his plans to the town carpenter who loved the idea and set to work making a patent for today's Adirondack chair. Now, 100 years later, there is no replacement for the feel of sinking back into these seats.

Wrought Iron or Aluminum
For long lasting, low maintenance furniture, you may want to choose a metal chair set. Most of today's brands are fully welded, giving you extreme durability in almost any shape or color. Wrought iron and aluminum will not rust and both are able to resist any weather conditions. If you prefer a softer chair, you may want to look into a metal frame with quick drying textilene fabric seats, a perfect fit for your poolside.

With or Without Cushions
The decision to add cushions to your patio chairs has the obvious benefit of great comfort even outdoors. When you're reading through the homes for sales, the descriptions commonly refer to various architectural or structural descriptions that are not always explained. Here is a list of some of the more common terms to help you get a clearer picture of what you're buying.

Foyer: A foyer in a commercial building such as a theatre is a large gathering space next to the main auditorium or seating area. This would be the area commonly occupied during intermission for instance. In a house, a foyer is generally the front entry area where guests arrive.

Transom: Either one long rectangular window over a door or window, or a series of small windows. Some are opening, but most are fixed and simply allow for extra light.

Dormer: An upstairs window with wooden peak that juts out from the roof line, and allows for windows in upstairs rooms. Usually they appear in multiples of two or three, and are common in cape cod style homes.

Sidelights: These are narrow windows bordering the outer edges of entrance doors. Some run the full length of the door, others run only part way and are filled in at the bottom.

Bay: A bay window projects out from an exterior wall creating added space in a room and adding to the appeal of the outside of the house. Often a seat or ledge is created inside to provide a sunny window seat.

Wainscoting: This is a type of wood paneling found on the lower part of the wall, running up about three to four feet. It is often painted or stained in a contrasting color and adds interest to a room.

Chair Rail: This wooden feature usually appears at the top of wainscoting, or can be a decorative trim on its own bordering a room. Commonly found in the dining room, a chair rail protects the wall from chairs being pushed away from the table. It also adds an accent to a plain wall or creates a divider between two decorating schemes such as paint and wallpaper.

French Doors: These are two doors hinged on the outside edge, allowing them to swing open in the center. Often made of paned glass, they can be used to separate two rooms such as a living and dining room, or often as exterior doors leading to a deck or patio.

Coffer: This is a ceiling with small indented wooden panels. In older homes these are constructed solely of wood, but newer models reconstruct the same look by creating a wooden drop ceiling or by bordering a textured drywall ceiling with decorative trim or molding.

Gables: These are the triangular end walls formed by a sloping roof. They can be at the front, side or back of a home, over dormers and bay windows.

Claw footed tub: These are the old style tubs supported by legs with claw shaped feet, similar to those found in furniture. They stand alone, unlike most tubs which are built into the walls. Today, most tubs are modern reproductions of the older versions.

Loft: This is an area usually on the second floor, at the top of the stairs overlooking the lower floor. It is generally bordered by a railing for safety, and creates an open, airy look in a home, allowing those on upper floors to view the activities below.

Not all that comfortable. Very difficult to sit straight/up-right without spreading one's legs to hang over the side. This position is not becoming to a lady. Also, for a lady, the front of the chair is very high compared to the seat bottom, thus a person's knees are high and for modesty's sake, too high as up-leg view is difficult to cover. If all of your guests wear pants or shorts, then okay.

Sitting down and rising are difficult because the front is high.

Black and White

In our mission to maintain mental toughness and mental strength we need to look at and dispute the errors in our thinking. These "thinking errors" are referred to as inferences by cognitive therapists. Inferences are assumptions of what we think is going on, has happened or will happen. They are statements of what we believe are the facts and go beyond the immediate and observable evidence. They can, be true or false, helpful or unhelpful, rational or irrational. Inferences are often gross distortions of reality. This article focuses on one of the most common and unhelpful forms of inferences called "Black and White" thinking

As suggested in the name, black and white thinking occurs when we think of things as being polarised to either one extreme or the other, without acknowledging or taking into account the possibility of any grey areas or middle ground. Such as

The boss is always right.
If you don't love me, you must hate me.
If you are not smart, then you must be stupid.
If you are not thin, then you are fat.
If you are not for us, then you are against us.
If it's not true, then it's a lie

All or nothing
Stay or go
Right or wrong
Yes or no
Good or evil
Excellent or awful
Love or hate
Winners or losers

Here's an everyday example. A student may view an exam result of 95% or above as evidence that he is intelligent, whereas a score of 85% will prove that he is brainless and thick. As we can see from this example, black and white thinking is common in those of us with perfectionist traits and can lead to feelings of inferiority.

Black and white thinking can also lead to anxiety and low self-worth. For example, if we are at a social event and someone we find attractive doesn't make eye contact, we may jump to the negative conclusion that we are disliked and ugly. However, if they smile at us, we may jump to the opposite conclusion and see this as proof, that we are desirable and worthwhile.

Sometimes, when we are stressed and emotionally overwhelmed we may fall into black and white thinking. When we are anxious and cannot think and reason clearly, we may opt for an "either...or..." solution. Doing this may give us quick relief from our distress and bring a temporary end to our discomfort but we may have lost the chance to come up with a more flexible, practical or helpful solution. This is the self-defeating thinking that we used as frustrated children, when our thinking was less developed. When people are stressed they often regress and "throw their toys out of the pram". For example:

"If I can't have designer trainers, I don't want anything",
"If I'm in goal, I'm not playing... it's my ball and I'm going home"
"If you don't call me, you don't care about me"
"I want my stapler or I can't work"
"Who took my chair, I'm leaving"
"I must have my mug or no coffee"...boo hoo...sob, sob...whinge, whinge..."

During these times of global recession and uncertainty, it is understandable that some people may get overwhelmed and distressed. However, we must resist the urge to revert to simplistic and polarised thinking. In a recession we need progressive thinking rather than regressive thinking. It's also worth bearing in mind, that black and white thinking is used in cults were no alternatives are given and freethinking is not allowed.

The Green Lady and the White Witch

The story never makes clear who the Green Lady really is or where she comes from. Some readers believe that the White Witch (Jadis) and the Lady of The Green Kirtle are the same person; Jadis, however, is slain by Aslan several hundred years earlier in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

The source of the speculation is probably the set of character sketches included in later editions of the books: the sketch for Jadis describes her as "completely evil, even in The Silver Chair." Since it is the Lady of the Green Kirtle who appears in The Silver Chair, some conclude that this must refer to the Green Lady. The character sketches, however, are recent additions to the books; they were not written by Lewis, and, in this regard, are not supported by Lewis's text.

The mechanics of how Jadis could return are never made clear, since she is killed at the end of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, her last appearance in the books except for the prequel The Magician's Nephew. In Prince Caspian, Nikabrik and his companions suggest that the White Witch could be resurrected — "who ever heard of a witch that really died?" In Lewis's text this plan is never put to the test, though the Disney film adaptation introduces a ritual that begins to pull Jadis back to life before the spell is broken.

OK, so you know I'm going to tell you to clean your workspace and get organized. But, you already figured that one out when you spent a half hour looking for that form you needed and then another 15 minutes trying to find the phone number you put on that green sticky note (or was it on the back of a green envelope?).

Either way, your efficiency is going downhill quickly and you really need to get this work completed today. Working in a home office can become overwhelming sometimes. It's too easy to let things pile up and clutter your workspace until you are confined to six inches of open space on either side of your keyboard. We've all been there with piles of folders, sticky notes, mail, passwords written on random papers, photos, cups, and various other "absolutely must haves" crowding our work environment.

A cluttered workstation hampers our ability to think clearly and creatively. We become inefficient, mentally as well as physically. We waste time, get confused, overwhelmed and lose our motivation. Our productivity becomes hostage to the mess.

An efficiently organized home office can provide you with the foundation to make more money online because clearing the clutter will help you feel in control, energetic and clear thinking. You'll get more work done, more effectively, and you will make more money.

Here are 5 simple ways to makeover your workspace and become super efficient in the process:

1. Clear out and clean everything. Clutter attracts clutter. Actually schedule time to completely clear off your office desk and surrounding work area. If you have a table nearby, clear that too. Move larger piles into another room until you have time to deal with them. Use a spray cleaner to wash down the desk and table area. Wash windows. Wipe down your computer and keyboard. Take everything off of your bulletin board. Remove from the room all plants and non-work related items like cups, and bottles of water, pictures, do-dads, etc. Do not store boxes of toys, clothes, and old furniture in your office. Toss anything you no longer need. Really make an effort to create an "empty" space.

2. Start Fresh. Open the windows. Arrange your computer or laptop, files, file cabinets, desk supplies in an orderly manner on your clean new desk area. Find a soft lamp to infuse light throughout the room. A very important element to your home office is a comfortable office chair. If you don't have one, now is the time to pamper yourself. If you are comfortable, you will be able to work longer and more efficiently.

3. Go Green. Add plants, move your desk near a window or into a more inspiring location. Set up computers, printers, and all electronics with an energy efficient power strip. Put images of outdoors and nature on your wall.

I agree with the person who suggested a mix of the 2 kinds of chairs if you have a table large enough for 6 chairs. If you are just getting four chairs, having them all the same will probably look better. Swivel chairs can be very comfortable for just sitting, but I always feel like I have to lean forward uncomfortably to eat at the table because they tend to tilt back slightly. So it really depends, are you planning on using the set mostly for sitting at the table and eating, or for sitting and relaxing? I've never had a problem with the legs on non-swivel chairs getting caught in the deck cracks--but it is something to consider if the cracks on your deck are wider, or the legs are particularly small. If you have a small house and you get the impression that the walls are closing in on you, you can try to enlarge it by installing French patio doors. With this type of project you can make the patio another room of your house, and it's not a major undertaking.

While it might not be possible to get outdoor entertainment all the time, you can use an outdoor room or a patio for a longer period of time. Many of the months you once spent only inside the house, can now be spent in an outdoor living area, and enjoyed much more. What I love about this type of project is that it makes a small house much bigger.

Plenty of houses get outdoor rooms these days, and it's becoming more common all the time. You can get a windbreak if the room has a corner where you can recess it, while still allowing you to get the fresh air that can make you healthier.

When you're thinking of an outdoor room, don't just think about some folding chairs and a picnic table. You can use the same type of furniture as you have in your house, but in most cases, people will pick fabric that is water resistant, to make sure the furniture isn't damaged by water that might blow over. You can get heat for this area from heaters with propane or natural gas, or from outdoor fireplaces. You can enter the area through the French patio doors.

Even though people usually use areas like these for conversations, you also serve dinner here or you can cook. Since they're so convenient, you can use these rooms even when the weather starts to become cold.

If you want to keep your house cool in the summer, you might want to use an outdoor room to do your cooking. It will allow the air conditioner to do its job while working less, since a source of heat will be moved to another area.

You can relax yourself and have some fun all year long in an outdoor room that has French patio doors. Even if the temperatures go up a lot, you can still go to it after sunset, and spend some time there, enjoying a nice breeze.

If the climate of your area is dry, you can use misting fans and misters to bring the temperature to a comfortable level when it's warm outside. Since the fresh air is abundant, the humidity doesn't build up as much when you use these appliances.

What's your style?

What do you want to use the space for?
