Knowing how to determine your skin tone and applying that knowledge to your cosmetic and clothing selection can bring out the best in your appearance. We all know when a certain color looks great on us while other colors seem to leave us looking ashen and worn out.

Skin tones fall into three classifications, they are: Warm, Cool and Neutral. Below are some easy steps to help you deterimine your skin tone.

Vein test - in a natural light, look at the inside of your wrist; if the veins appear greenish this indicates you have yellow undertones and thus would have a warm skin tone. Veins that appear to be more bluish indicate a cool skin tone.

Pony tail test - pull all your hair back away from the face in a pony tail or with a headband and thoroughly cleanse the face. Place a white towel or cloth around your neck and shoulders, if you face looks more yellow this would indicate a warm skin tone, whereas a bluish reflection would mean a cool skin tone.

Silver/Gold test - If you think you look better in gold than silver, this indicates a warm skin tone. People with cool skin tones usually look better in silver. Additionally, you can use a gold and silver cloth for this test, hold a swatch of gold fabric under the chin, does it make you look healthy, ashen or neither. Try the same with silver fabric, what do you see? a bluish hue or yellow undertones?

Genetic natural color of eyes and hair - As a rule of thumb, normally people with blue, green or grey eyes with blond, black or brown hair have a cool skin tone. Additionally, cool skin tones will have a pink or rosy undertone. Those people with brown, black, or hazel eyes and have black, brown, blond, red, or strawberry blond hair are usually have a warm skin tone and have a golden or apricot undertone. However, there are always exceptions to the rule when trying to deterime your skin tone by the color of your hair and eyes.

If after doing the above tests you are still unable to determine your skin tone, you may fall into the neutral skin tone. Neutral skin tones can wear any color and look great, however neutral skin tones may lean towards either warm or cool. For instance, a neutral skin tone can look great in a warm color and fabulous in a cool color or vice a versa.

So what colors are best for your skin tone? Below is a short summary, again there are always exceptions to the rule.

Cool Skin Tone - Consider rich, true colors. These would include black, navy, red, shocking pink, rich raspberries, deep emerald greens, royal blue, plums or pure black. Additionally wear icy tones instead of pastels for a lighter color. Cool skin tones should avoid beige, orange and gold.

Warm Skin Tone- Consider earth colors either crisp or muted. Normally those with a warm skin tone look great in sage greens, gold, mochas, and bronzes. For a softer color try peach, apricot yellow.

Neutral Skin Tone - luckily for you, all colors will look good however, as indicated above most neutral skin tones will sway one way or another, so while a warm color may look great on you a cool color may look fabulous.

Selecting the right colors based on your skin tone can add so much to your overall appearance. The right color can add sparkle to your overall being and complexion while the wrong color can leave you looking ashen and your complexion washed out.

The Green Lady and the White Witch

The story never makes clear who the Green Lady really is or where she comes from. Some readers believe that the White Witch (Jadis) and the Lady of The Green Kirtle are the same person; Jadis, however, is slain by Aslan several hundred years earlier in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

The source of the speculation is probably the set of character sketches included in later editions of the books: the sketch for Jadis describes her as "completely evil, even in The Silver Chair." Since it is the Lady of the Green Kirtle who appears in The Silver Chair, some conclude that this must refer to the Green Lady. The character sketches, however, are recent additions to the books; they were not written by Lewis, and, in this regard, are not supported by Lewis's text.

The mechanics of how Jadis could return are never made clear, since she is killed at the end of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, her last appearance in the books except for the prequel The Magician's Nephew. 4. Inspire. On your desk and windowsill, use the power of three to inspire you. Three pictures of kids, friends, family, etc. Three plants to add fresh oxygen to your workspace such as a Money Tree and Lucky Bamboo, and ivy. Three quotes about money and motivation.

5. Less is More. Aim for a Zen quality to your workspace. Only that which you need in the moment should be on your desk. All books and reference materials should be on a bookcase. Everything else goes back to its home (file cabinets, drawers, folders). Take out one project at a time.

i have a large compost area in my back yard... i throw all produce in with seeds. occasionally something will sprout. i have had pumpkin, potatoes, and huge sunflowers actually grow. i remove the plants i want to keep and plant them in pots before churning the compost. if you don't want growth you should keep churning the soil to keep the plants from settling or remove the sprout and let it dry out before throwing it back in. i believe the key is to keep the soil loose and moving.

Before you start, it's a good idea to have your soil tested to check for contamination. If it is not suitable to plant in then a raised bed may be your best option. Location is important. Healthy plants will thrive if given the right conditions. Try to make sure that you create a south-facing plot, where the sun can fall directly onto the plants for at least five hours a day. I am a pro and I can tell you it is hard to install any door but a patio door is by far the hardest.

The inside blinds are like anything else, there is no best answer, just preferences. If you want the window treatment out of the way and kids are not going to wreck the mechanism, the internal blinds are useful.

If the windows in your home are worn-out, run-down and drafty, you're throwing money, well, out the window.

With Winter here, and utility rate increases driving home heating costs higher than ever, windows that have deteriorated—or worse yet, been improperly installed—can be costing homeowners thousands of dollars per year.  With natural gas prices predicted to increase this Winter, now is a perfect time to inspect your windows.

It is time to replace your windows when they no longer serve their purpose—keeping the heat in during Winter and the cold in during Summer.

If you think that drafty windows are only costing you a few dollars a month on your heating bills, think again.  According to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy, by converting from single-pane to double-pane clear glass windows, an average homeowner can cut his or her heating bill by as much as 25 percent.  By converting to argon filled, double-pane windows with a low-E coating, the heating bill could be cut as much as 35 percent.

When considering the long-term return on your investment (homeowners can expect to recoup a significant portion of the cost of replacement windows), you could easily be looking at thousands of dollars saved in less than five years.  

How do you tell if your windows no longer work and need to be replaced?  According to Stanford Blanck, co-owner of Taylor-based Wallside Windows, a manufacturer and installer of vinyl replacement windows, energy efficiency in windows is a result of two factors—the window frame and the window glass.  Blanck, who has more than 30 years of window replacement experience, said the following areas are what to look for:

The condition of the window frames

If your windows are loose and rattling, it means the sash and channels have deteriorated, and the window is no longer sealed properly. A loose sash means that the window's life is over—it needs to be replaced. Also, if you can actually feel air drafts around the window, whether in winter or summer, the window is not doing what it's supposed to do— it is time to replace it.  Rotting wood and peeling paint are results of condensation—a sign that the windows no longer work properly.  

If the frames are aluminum, you might consider replacing them with wood or vinyl. According to Blanck, aluminum is a conductive metal, and does a poor job of keeping heat in the house. Aluminum frames are found mainly on older houses, and are rarely installed anymore. 

The window glass

Windows today are far superior to the single-pane windows of years past. 

"Simply put, if you have single-pane windows—even if the frames are in perfect condition—you should replace the glass," Blanck said.  "Single-pane windows are costing you money."

Why? "Energy efficiency," Blanck noted.

How well windows keep heat in and cold out is measured by something known as the  U-Factor—the lower the U-Factor, the more energy efficient the glass.

The U-Factor for a single pane of glass is 1.30.  Adding another pane of glass by installing a double-pane window reduces the U-Factor to .49, meaning heat loss is cut by more than half.  If the double-pane window has a low emissions coating, the U-Factor drops to .34.  And if the space between the windows is filled with an inert gas, such as argon, the U-Factor is reduced even further.

"The best window is the one that is installed properly"                                               

But the single most important factor in window efficiency, according to Blanck, is installation. "No matter how well a window is made," he said, "if it is not installed correctly, you bought a problem, not a solution."

If windows are not fitted correctly or properly installed, an excessive amount of the home's heat can be lost through even the slightest breach or opening.

To ensure proper installation, hire a professional. A good rule of thumb is to seek out window companies that have been in business at least as long their guarantee.

Remember, no matter how expensive your windows or how great they look in the showroom, you're wasting your money if they're not installed properly in your home.

You mean the one in Michigan, right? I went there three years ago. It might have changed since then, but here's what I remember: You have to do A LOT of practicing while you're there, but the music is usually really good. The counselors are very nice (mine let us play practical jokes on other cabins) and there are instructors for each instrument. They are usually pretty knowledgeable and professional. There isn't much for activities other than music. There are electives for things like drawing, choir, writing, pretty much the arts. There's also swimming (in a pool, not the lake, the lake is gross) and sports and other basic summer camp activities. There are concerts you have to watch every other evening, and to be honest, they're boring. Really, for one, I swear the clarinetist was playing the same part over and over and over! But, I survived to talk about it, so it could have been worse. The food isn't bad, but DON'T EAT THE SCRAMBLED EGGS. Really, don't. You'll understand if you go. It tends to be a bit expensive too, but you can have auditions through school in which you're awarded scholarship money to help pay. If your good, it can cover a lot of the expenses.

Plants that are required to grow in hanging baskets really are being asked to perform in unique situations as the environment within a hanging basket isn't quite like anywhere else you might put your plants. For example, the area allowed for root growth is a lot smaller than anywhere else, even pots, as pots tend to only have one or two plants of the same type in them, whereas baskets tend to have a lot of different types of plant all thrown together in a small space. After watering the soil they are in and therefore the roots dry out a lot quicker than anywhere else too as the whole area is exposed to the air.

Because of these unique situations it is very important that you start out with good quality plants. If you haven't reared them yourself in the greenhouse then this means ensuring you buy healthy plants from the garden centre. If you have the smallest suspicion that the plant is diseased then don't buy it.

You also need to ensure you are using a good quality growing medium too. There are special mixes you can buy that are especially formulated to get your hanging basket plants to perform at their best. They tend to be soil-less compounds and are much lighter than the soil in your garden. It isn't wise to consider using garden soil for your hanging baskets as this soil contains weeds and disease that will cause problems for your plants. Some of the hanging basket mixes also contain special polymers that absorb water. The idea of these polymers is that when the soil dries out following watering they steadily release water they have stored up. This means your plants will remain watered for longer meaning less distress for your plants from the continuous cycle of complete wetness from watering followed by long periods of being dry.

As mentioned above, one of the unique elements associated with hanging baskets is the fact that you will cram in lots of different types of plant to a relatively small space in order to create the greatest impact. One tip here is to keep the larger of your plants to the middle and put your smaller ones to the outside so they don't get buried. Keep any trailing varieties to the outside too. For the best results go for the biggest hanging basket you can for the hanging space you have available as this will make more room available to your plants for growth.

Watering is probably the most essential part to maintaining a great looking hanging basket. You should vary the number of times you water your hanging baskets depending on the weather. On hot dry days you will need to water them more because the light soil dries out much more quickly than your normal garden soil. Don't be afraid to fill the basket with water as it will drain away quite freely. It is probably best to invest in a watering wand to water your baskets as it will make the process easier. It also allows you to put the water directly on the soil rather than over the top of the flowers. You can damage flowers by watering over the top of them in two ways. The first is that they will get damaged by the impact of the water on the petals themselves and the second is through the sun. While water droplets remain on the surface of leaves and petals they act as lenses and in sunlight can actually cause burning.

As well as the water itself, you would be best advised to occasionally add some plant food as the light soil in the basket will lose its nutrients quickly and they need to be replenished.

If you make the time and expend the effort on taking all these steps then you will be rewarded with stunning looking hanging baskets that will last throughout the Summer and if you're lucky even longer.

A stuck pixel can usually be fixed, while a dead pixel can be the result of failed hardware and may not be able to be fixed. Either way, attempting the repair of your monitor, or monitors, will help you decide which it is. There are actually several ways in which to do this.

Massaging, Pressing or Tapping:

1. Turn off power to the monitor. If you are using a laptop, you'll need to turn off the entire machine.
2. Put gentle pressure on the dead pixel with your finger or the end of a pencil eraser. If you're worried about smudges or scratches, get a clean damp cloth. Protect your screen while doing this and do not apply too much pressure.
3. Turn the power back on.
4. Gently rub the spot where the dead pixel is located, until the color begins to change. You may need to do this for anywhere from several minutes to several times within an hour. A variation of this method is to gently tap the area where the pixel is located, with a black background in place. And remember, always be gentle with the screen or you will cause more damage.
5. When the pixel is repaired, use a white background to make sure that it is the right color.

Color Flashing:

1. Download a freeware color flashing program. These are specifically designed to stimulate the dead pixel, as well as those around it. One such program is a small, rapidly flashing square, which can be dragged over the pixel.
2. Leave the program running for at least 1 hour. If, at the end of that hour, the pixel is still stuck or dead, you may need to use a full screen version and let it run for as much as half a day (12 hours).

It is very important to understand that none of these methods is guaranteed to work. Trial and error may give you the results that you want, but you might just be stuck with that annoying dead pixel. Also, if you're going to try to send your monitor in for replacement under warranty, understand that a dead pixel is not considered grounds for replacement by most manufacturers.

Of course, many users are not bothered by a dead pixel, especially if you have dual monitors or one large monitor and that dead or stuck pixel is just one in a sea of pixels and space. It helps, however, to start out with a quality LCD Monitor, so make sure you purchase a trusted brand. HP LCD Monitors, Samsung LCD Monitors, and Sony LCD Monitors are just a few of the reliable brands. Remember, if it's some off-name brand you've never heard of and the price seems too good to be true, it is. If you do run in to a stuck or dead pixel, try the instructions above and there's a decent chance you'll revive the pixel.

Allergy and Mental Disease

The following may come as a surprise to most people, including most medical doctors. 

Most mental disease is caused by unsuspected brain allergies!

This fact was illuminated for me by Dr Marshall Mandell in the early 80's.  He appeared on the Phil Donahue show, and had videos of persons with mental problems caused or worsened by allergen testing.  He was the first to name such as "brain allergies".

In 1982, Dr Von Hilsheimer introduced the first End-Point-Titration allergy testing into Florida, and I worked with him at an allergy clinic in Orlando.  We amazed several MD allergists in that clinic with depression and many other cases being solved.

During that time, I studied allergy/sensitivity extensively.  I found a list of mental diseases caused by allergens that surprised me.  None of my previous experience and learning in psychology had prepared me for such.  I found the following in a "standard" text on allergies as "Mental Symptoms".  It surprised me, and probably will you.

Schizophrenia, depression, hyperactivity (ADD/ADHD), Emotional instability or hypersensitivity, Insomnia, Chronic fatigue, crying jags, stuttering, excessive daydreaming, anxiety, panic attacks, withdrawn, listless, seizures, aggressive behavior, anger, irritability, silly, tense, restless, excited, agitated, behavior problems in children, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, poor comprehension, confusion, impaired attention, obsessive thoughts, compulsive behavior, feelings of unreality, disorientation, false beliefs or delusions, hallucinations, suicidal, feel like hurting self.

While giving a 4 day orthomolecular seminar in Soviet Georgia in 2000, I was introduced to the latest EEG biofeedback therapy of raising the amplitude of the brain waves just above Alpha, in the range of 12-15 Hz.  (later named the SMR brain wave) In the discussion, I remembered that list of mental diseases caused by allergens.  I then proposed the following theory:  "Raising the SMR brain wave somehow changed the affect of allergens on the brain.  To date, no other theory fits the data. 

When I returned to the US, I started the first leasing of EEG BF equipment for home use.  As you can imagine this did not endear me to the clinicians who were charging up to $250 per half hour for the service.  The actual operation is so simple that anyone with a high school education can easily learn how to do it, although the learned clinicians will (as usual) protest the necessity of a professional approach.  (This in spite of no record of harm being done to anyone, and no license being required to practice this simple therapy.) 

In 2001, Dr Jiri Tyrl of the Czech Biofeedback Society listed papers about EEG biofeedback that showed the following mental diseases as being either cured or greatly improved by this feedback:

 Epilepsy; ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Academic-Cognitive Enhancement; Anxiety Disorders, PTSD, Sleep Disorders, Depression, Hemispheric Asymmetry, Anger, Addictive Disorders, Brain Injury, Stroke, Coma, Spasticity, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Autoimmune Dysfunctions, Headache and other Pain, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Parkinson's Dystonia, Tourette's Syndrome, Autism; Cognitive Decline with Aging, Asthma Hypertension Dissociative Disorders, Creativity, Optimal Functioning, Criminal Recidivism.

This list was further proof (to me at least) that allergens were involved in much more mental disease that was suspected, and that this particular EEG biofeedback (now known as raising the SMR brain wave), DID somehow relieve this allergen susceptibility.  (Both my wife and I have either "cured" or alleviated lifelong allergies.)
 
In 2004, one of those comic light bulbs went on above my head, and I realized that it should be possible to do the same thing - namely raise the SMR brain wave - by use of subliminal messaging. 

I put out a call for volunteers, and got over 20, who sent me weekly emails for 4 weeks.  Most were various types of ADD/ADHD, with a few depressives and insomniacs mixed in.  The results definitely showed that both my allergen theory and my subliminal theory were correct. 

In 6 more volunteer tests since that time, we have shown that this therapy (named Neuroliminal Training) is at least as effective as EEG Biofeedback (aka Neurofeedback) for ADD/ADHD, depression, insomnia, autism, and epilepsy. 

We're going even further with a current test that includes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, PTSD, Depression of all types, etc.  This test will end in January 2009.
