Mixed Seed
how do I plant the seed mix for my sulcata tortoise?
I purchased some grassland graze mix through turtlecafe.com ( I highly recommend NOT ordering from them) Well after over 2 weeks I finally recieved my order and there is no instructions. I have a 1/2 lb bag of mixed weeds and a small bag of bermuda grass seeds. I am sure I can look up how to plant the grass, but how do I plant the mixed weed seeds?? If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
Turtle Cafe used to be a great place to order seeds, cactus pads and such but since they've changed owners -- I'll never order from them again.
This is what I do...fill a container with organic soil, spread the seeds, moisten with water and cover the container and set in the sun. This will cause them to germinate in 3-10 days. Once they start sprouting you can remove the cover and allow them to grow.
If you want seeds that will grow and expect quality... go to Carolina Pet Supply. The owners raise turtles and tortoises and offer quality products at a reasonable price.
Guar Gum is derived from the ground endosperm of Cyamopsis Tetragonolobus, a plant of the Leguminosae family. The plant grows to about 1-2 metres high with vertical stalks. The seed pods, about 15 cm long, grow on these stalks and hold 6-9 seeds which are about 2-3 mm in diameter. Roughly, 14-16% of the seed is the hull, 38-45% is the endosperm and 40-46% germ.
The crop is sown after the first rains in June/July and is harvested after 3-4 months. It is a hardy, drought resistant crop that requires moderate rainfall at regular intervals.
Guar gum, also called guaran, is a galactomannan. It is primarily the ground endosperm of guar beans. The guar seeds are dehusked, milled and screened to obtain the guar gum. It is typically produced as a free flowing, pale, off-white colored, coarse to fine ground powder. Guar gum is economical because it has almost 8 times the water-thickening potency of cornstarch - only a very small quantity is needed for producing sufficient viscosity. Thus it can be used in various multi-phase formulations: as an emulsifier because it helps to prevent oil droplets from coalescing, and/or as a stabilizer because it helps to prevent solid particles from settling. guar gum manufacturers define different grades and qualities of guar gum by the particle size, the viscosity that is generated with a given concentration, and the rate at which that viscosity develops. Coarse-mesh guar gums, will typically but not always develop viscosity more slowly. They may achieve a reasonably high viscosity, but will take longer to achieve. On the other hand, they will disperse better than fine-mesh, all conditions being equal. A finer mesh, like a 200 mesh, requires more effort to dissolve. guar gum powder is used as a thickener and emulsifier in commercial food processing.
