Turtle Cafe used to be a great place to order seeds, cactus pads and such but since they've changed owners -- I'll never order from them again.

This is what I do...fill a container with organic soil, spread the seeds, moisten with water and cover the container and set in the sun. This will cause them to germinate in 3-10 days. Once they start sprouting you can remove the cover and allow them to grow.

Guar Gum is derived from the ground endosperm of Cyamopsis Tetragonolobus, a plant of the Leguminosae family. The plant grows to about 1-2 metres high with vertical stalks. The seed pods, about 15 cm long, grow on these stalks and hold 6-9 seeds which are about 2-3 mm in diameter. Roughly, 14-16% of the seed is the hull, 38-45% is the endosperm and 40-46% germ.

The crop is sown after the first rains in June/July and is harvested after 3-4 months. It is a hardy, drought resistant crop that requires moderate rainfall at regular intervals.

Guar gum, also called guaran, is a galactomannan. It is primarily the ground endosperm of guar beans. The guar seeds are dehusked, milled and screened to obtain the guar gum. It is typically produced as a free flowing, pale, off-white colored, coarse to fine ground powder. Guar gum is economical because it has almost 8 times the water-thickening potency of cornstarch - only a very small quantity is needed for producing sufficient viscosity. Thus it can be used in various multi-phase formulations: as an emulsifier because it helps to prevent oil droplets from coalescing, and/or as a stabilizer because it helps to prevent solid particles from settling. guar gum manufacturers define different grades and qualities of guar gum by the particle size, the viscosity that is generated with a given concentration, and the rate at which that viscosity develops. Coarse-mesh guar gums, will typically but not always develop viscosity more slowly. They may achieve a reasonably high viscosity, but will take longer to achieve. On the other hand, they will disperse better than fine-mesh, all conditions being equal. A finer mesh, like a 200 mesh, requires more effort to dissolve. guar gum powder is used as a thickener and emulsifier in commercial food processing. It has almost 8 times the thickening power as corn starch, and is used in dressings, sauces, milk products, and baking mixes. You can't really mention BBQ grills without talking about Weber. They are one of the most durable grills available with good customer service as well. Our old Weber has lasted more than 12 years with no problems. For everyone but the most die-hard "competition" griller, its a great brand to go with.

If you want a side burner you will probably stretch the $500 price range if you go with Weber.

1. What is the difference between direct and indirect cooking?
Direct cooking on a BBQ is when the food is cooked directly onto the grill or griddle of your Barbecue.

Please be aware that if you pot up too much then your plant will concentrate on sending out roots and occupying the available space. The energy will be going into root growth and you're not likely to see much development in the stems and leaves. Basil is an annual so it's only going to last for a year or so before it gives you heartache. I only pot up an inch or so at a time to encourage growth both above and below ground level. Pinching it back will encourage growth and give you a non-stop supply of fresh herbs. It makes great pesto.

If you are a beginner start slowly, add just a little at a time adjusting as you go along until you have it just right. You will see in most instances that an individual herb is associated with a particular food item.

Basil is paired with tomatoes, Oregano with sauces, Rosemary with lamb and Chives with butter or cream cheese. Of course, none of them are limited to these items, but you will see them paired most often with that particular food. Use your imagination and experiment, experiment, experiment! You can make herb vinegars for salad dressings, marinades, or soups.

Herb oils are very useful in cooking whenever a recipe calls for it. Fresh herbs as garnishes dress up any dish making it look truly spectacular. Lay individual sprigs of rosemary over broiled lamb chops. Chop fresh parsley and sprinkle it over the top of your potato salad.

The combinations are endless and the outcome delicious. Fresh herbs will keep in the refrigerator for several days but then you must freeze them. They can be frozen by laying them a paper towel and putting them in a plastic bag. Once they are frozen only use them in cooking not as garnishes. A friend of mine washes them, puts them an ice cube tray, covers them with water and then freezes them.

When she needs them for soup, stews or sauces she just drops a cube in. My favorite herbs to grow are basil, oregano, lemon balm, parsley and mint. Mint is great but be careful, mint can over run your garden. A tip here would be to bury an empty coffee can and plant the mint in it. The can prevents the mint fromcreeping all through your garden.

I love to make herb butters. Take a half of a cup of softened butter and mix in about 4 tablespoons of a fresh herb. Lay out a piece of saran wrap, place the butter in the middle roll the saran wrap up to form alogout of the butter. Put in the refrigerator and anytime you need a pat of butter just cut it off the"og butter: potatoes, bread, steaks, noodles or any kind of sauce).

A fresh herb in any salad dressing really makes it sparkle. You can use any herb or a combination, be creative. I learned a trick a long time ago using basil, lemon and avocados to create and instant natural face mask. Put a big handful of basil in a blender and run it on high.

Once the basil has been pulverized, throw in a half of an avocado and a large teaspoon of lemon juice, mix until smooth. Wash your face, pat it dry and gently rub the avocado mixture on. Leave it on as long as you like, then use warm water to it wash off. These are just a few ways you can use fresh herbs from your garden. I am sure you will come up with many more. Happy cooking

Believe it or not you can do all of these and still have the evenings to catch a show, have a first class meal, or play your favorite game.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (NCA) is located approximately 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas and offers miles of trails and some excellent rock climbing. Access is convenient for everyone with a one way loop road winding through the area. Many interesting areas are a short hike from the main road. Calico Hills, the main red sandstone feature, has an overlook area right on the side of the road. This is a BLM administered site and Federal Park Fees apply.

Another beautiful park filled with natural canyons and the amazing detail of red sandstone is Valley of Fire State Park. This park is located a short drive north on I-15. You can drive through the park and admire the scenery or take advantage of the trails. While the drive in itself is very scenic, the real attractions all are reached by hiking trails. Check with the park officials on which trails are best for you. If you drive through the park you can visit Overton and see the Indian Village replica and the northern Lake Mead Area.

Lake Mead Nation Recreation Area is the result of the Hoover Dam. Lake Mead offers a vast array for outdoor enthusiasts. Swimming, water skiing, and fishing are a wonderful way for you and your family to spend the day. There are rental crafts available and if your budget allows you can rent a houseboat and spend your vacation on the lake. Trust me you will enjoy the experience. Jet skis are another popular way to enjoy the lake. I personally enjoy taking a smaller boat and just cruising across the lake. My favorite is the narrows area. Here the lake flows through a canyon area with the walls rising nearly vertical on both sides. If you are a diver you will find many areas to practice and play. With the water levels low because of the drought, many things that were long covered are now within the divers reach. Remember that this is a federally protected area. Do not take souvenirs from your dive. Wildlife in the area includes big horn sheep, deer and many others.

The Hoover Dam is a Great Depression era construction project that is simply awe inspiring to view. Walk through the visitor's center, read the exhibits to see how the dam was constructed. It is a tribute to the men who risked their lives to build the dam. Take a tour of the dam itself, that's right, walk through the inside of the dam. Before you leave make sure you take the time to look down the face of the dam to the Colorado River below.

Las Vegas is home to many golf courses including one former PGA tournament site and one current site. Soon another tournament site will be added approximately one hour north of Las Vegas. Prices range from the relatively inexpensive to the very expensive. Check with your hotel for a full list of all of the courses.

Shopping opportunities are all over the Las Vegas- Henderson area. Besides the shops at the casinos, you can find several malls in the valley and strip malls are located throughout. You could literally spend years shopping here.

you will need to broil...
BBQ sauce:
1/2 cup ketchup
6 tbs honey
3 tbsp vinegar
1 tbs mustard
1tbs sugar

Pound chicken pieces and sprinkle with salt, black pepper and a bit of paprika, prepare one cup of milk with one egg yolk, whisk well, marinate chicken in fridge (Important) overnight. remove, marinate chicken in BBQ sauce 4 hours in fridge.
take out of the fridge for 1 hour
heat broiler well (5 minutes)
prepare broiler dish so that the grease can drip to a pan below
Broil 6 minutes on one side and 6 minutes on the other side amking sure it is not too close to a flame... brush with leftover BBQ sauce twice while cooking.
let rest 3 minutes, serve with baked beans and salad.

Nothing's moving, even though you know you have to move your bowels. Everything in your body is sending you that signal. You feel bloated and uncomfortable pressure, but when you try to go, nothing happens. Or, if you do finally go, it hurts.

There are many reasons of constipation. Irregular meal times, coupled with more of synthetic, spicy and oily foods are some of the causes that contribute to constipation. However, constipation also stems from various psychological causes such as tensions, depressions, extreme emotions of anger and fear, and also climatic conditions.

Treatment:

1. Here's a constipation remedy that you can use if you have chronic constipation. In addition to just drinking apple juice, you can accelerate your peristaltic action with prune juice. If you have a juicer you can make fresh apple juice and drink 3-4 glasses a day. You can also drink store-bought apple juice but try to get fresh squeezed and not the type that has been flash pasteurized or pasteurized.

2. Bananas are rich in potassium. They assist in healing open wounds in the interior body membranes. They are helpful in stopping diarrhea and at the same time in promoting bowel movements.

3. Relieving tension at home is a remedy for constipation as well. Relaxation can loosen your bowels. When someone is frightened or tense their mouth dries up and their heart beat increases. Slow down and take it easy. This also causes the bowels to contract as well.

4. Drink more water during the day - you do not have to start drinking 8-10 glasses a day. But you should add a couple of more glasses than you normally drink and you can add drinking more fruit juices - apple, cherry, peach, grape, or grapefruit juice.

5. Squeeze one lemon into a glass of warm distilled water. Drink it first thing when you wake up. Don't drink anything else for at least 1/2 hour

6. One must eat this fruit regularly for two or three months. If one cannot have the raw fruit he can make a thick solution by mixing the fruit pulp with water and then have it. Another very good natural home remedy for constipation is the pear fruit . One can either have it in breakfast or before dinner. The pear fruit helps in the clearing up of the entire amount of fecal matter .

7. Mix Spiegel seeds and warm milk. This can be done by dipping the seeds, 5-10grams in 200 grams of warm milk, add sugar and you have for yourself an effective treatment.

8. Cucumbers are good for preventing constipation. But they can be used in the carrot-spinach juice or the apple-spinach juice. Cucumbers make these juices more powerful. Use only about ¼ - ½ of a cucumber when adding it to these juices. You can experiment with how much cucumber you want to add.

9. Potassium works wonders on the walls of the colon and helps to stimulate peristaltic action which makes your bowels move.
